The Dragon's Head Blog: Health in the Community: Costa Rica shares the results of the health survey

On Saturday, 28 July, 75 people, including participants, friends, and family from the Asociación de Taoist Tai Chi Centre in Heredia as well as participants from the three satellites in Costa Rica, gathered for a “Health in the Community” banquet at our Club’s Centre.  We also hosted several members of the medical community, who had the opportunity during the presentations to learn about the discoveries made in the Health Survey conducted by the  Society at both national and international levels during the years 2016 and 2017. Brochures were prepared for guests and a slide presentation to accompany the talk.

Weeks before the banquet, we offered training sessions so that members could become familiar with the many tasks necessary to offer an event of this type.  We cleaned widows, decorated the club, set up washing up stations, reviewed table caring, plating, serving and bussing and practiced different jobs in small groups comprised mostly of beginners.  These training sessions made it possible for us to do our best to take care of the participants during the banquet.

During the banquet, we heard various testimonials about the great benefits that people have received with the practice of Taoist Tai Chi and how those people have overcome very serious health challenges.  Many participants said they felt moved by these testimonials to continue a diligent practice of the arts.

“It was my first banquet and I helped right away; I learned a lot, also from the preparations in the weeks before.”

“To see so many people work for several weeks prior to the event is marvelous; it teaches something very profound about these arts.”

“The order, the flow of things, everything was like a beautiful symphony where we felt cared for and well-fed.”

“To hear the testimonial from one of the participants was very moving, a very real example of how these arts can change a person’s life.”

While the team who looked after the guests during the banquet were in turn served and looked after, the clean up continued by participants who had enjoyed sitting with the guests.

The coordinator of the washing up brigade worked hard throughout the entire event, later joking, “I loved doing this job here, because I have never done it at home.”

The practice of Taoist Tai Chi definitely benefits not only our physical health; it is also helping us to change cultural patterns, which helps in interpersonal relations and which translates to improved quality of life.

From this small Central American country, we appreciate having this opportunity to count on these arts.  Thank you, Master Moy, for your profound, indelible legacy!
